Tanghalang Ateneo Goes Absurd with "?" Two by Ionesco

Tanghalang Ateneo jumpstarts its 30^th Season, Echoes, this July with two modern classics by Eugène Ionesco—Ang Sopranong Kalbo (translated by Rolando S. Tinio) and The Lesson. The double bill of absurd plays, wildly funny on the surface but sinister in its implications, comes together under the name “?” Two by Ionesco, with the question mark representing the reaction of people who cannot apprehend what the other is saying.

Ang Sopranong Kalbo introduces characters or the “non-characters” rather, who engage in silly banter, storytelling and poetry recitation in attempts to relate with one another. The Lesson, in turn, is a frustrating attempt by a seemingly harmless professor to teach mathematics and philology to a bright, young girl, an effort that results in violence.

Common to both plays is the horror of miscommunication. In Tanghalang Ateneo’s version of Kalbo, however, this horror arises not from the hollowness of identity, as in the original text, but from the hollowness of national identity. In The Lesson, the horror comes about as a colonial educator seeks to impose his will on a native subject. The comedy remains, however, as nonsense, noise, and non sequiturs dominate the text.

“?” showcases the talents of an all-student ensemble. Kalbo has Exzell Macomb and Peanuts Valerio play Mr. and Mrs. Santos while Gelo Brillantes and Ia Solis play the Martins. Regina de Vera portrays the maid, Marie, alongside Mel Pante who portrays the fireman. The Lesson features Mikey Panopio as the Professor, Bea Gulinao as the Pupil and Mon Querubin as the Maid.

Ricardo Abad and BJ Crisostomo co-direct the plays. Set design is by Monica Sebial with Peanuts Valerio and Sam Quizon handling the costume design.

“?” Two by Ionesco runs from July 2 to 5 and 9 to 12 at 7pm, with additional 3pm shows on July 5 and 12 at the Communication Studio of the Ateneo de Manila University. 	The Director is looking for actors who are clear and crisp in Tagalog, are able to focus inadvertently while in character and in scene, are truthful and convincing in their portrayal, display correct and profound understanding of the text - as manifested by their subtexts, emotions, expressions and delivery details like pauses, stresses, variations in pitch, tone, pace and loudness - during delivery, have flexibility and ample range of vocal and physical equipment in characterization and in delivery, and fit the physical type of characters the play needs.

Audition Guidelines: The Director assumes that you had at least 30 minutes to prepare for this auditions since you were asked to allot an hour for your whole audition process: 20 minutes for initial preparations (i.e. read peripheral instructions; fill up the audition form, if not yet completed; choose your audition pieces), 30 minutes to prepare (understand – memorize – rehearse) for your auditions, and 10 minutes for the audition proper. For those who will come to auditions without prepared stanzas yet, the Audition Manager will have copies of selected Florante at Laura stanzas from which you can choose and borrow. In choosing, consider the three (3) types of delivery you are required to display (kindly refer to the Director's Instructions attached for more details). Only upon the request of the applicant would he be allowed to proceed with the audition proper right after filling up the audition form (without or with less than the 30-minute preparation time). The Director will presume though that you have already chosen your stanzas and prepared enough for them before coming to the auditions, since Balagtas’ Florante at Laura is very accessible in bookstores, in homes and on-line (http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Parthenon/8075/florante.txt). No aspirant will be obligated to proceed with the audition proper without the whole 30-minute preparation, unless requested by the aspirant himself. Thus, since the auditions will last only until 8:00pm, no aspirant (who would demand for the 30-minute preparation) will be entertained after 7:00pm. Kindly print the audition form (provided as an attachment) and accomplish it before coming to the auditions. Please prepare 2 2x2 photos as well. AUDITION REMINDERS:

Each aspiring actor is expected to memorize and deliver his own choice of three (3) different stanzas from Balagtas’ Florante at Laura for his auditions. He must do the three (3) modes of delivery – one (1) stanza for each mode – that the play will usually use, in the following order.

1. Teach – very animated; relating to a big, young audience

2. Converse – comfortable; relating to another character

3. Lament/Rejoice – intense emotion; self-absorbed

Ø Please remember that Florante at Laura is a poem, and this production will keep and observe its poetry. Each word is believed to have been carefully selected and is charged with meaning. The words of Balagtas should be deemed as heightened language.

Ø Please distinguish between Realistic and Truthful. The premium is on Truth, not in Realism. A Truthful presentation is characterized by Solid Intention and Comfort (consistent and accustomed – in spite of its great demand), not by Updating to Modern Ways and mere Effortlessness.

Tanghalang Ateneo and TeatroFilipino Integrated return to Shakespeare with a novel rendition of Measure for Measure, a play on desire, morality, and justice. Translated as Hakbang sa Hakbang, the production marks the first time the play will be staged in Filipino. It will also showcase student talents under the direction of Ronan Capinding, the acclaimed young director of such plays as Middle Finger po and Ang Nilalang ni Victor Frankenstein.

Tanghalang Ateneoâ€™s Hakbang sa Hakbang draws on dance movements from contemporary pop culture to capture the spirit of permissiveness that marks the play. This fusion of contemporary dance and Shakespearean text reveals as well the persona of the characters and the tone of each scene. Staged in the round, the play also gives audiences the experience of intimately witnessing the story unfold in their midst. One of Shakespeareâ€™s problem plays, Hakbang sa Hakbang seeks a philosophy of morals beyond Puritanism and libertarianism.

In the play, the laidback Duke Vincentio (alternately played by Dan Chua and Exzell Macomb) has appointed the austere Angelo (alternately played by Paolo Apagalang and Gelo Brilliantes) to temporarily take his place as ruler while he is on a diplomatic mission.

The new ruler suddenly forces the freewheeling and amoral citizenry into strict adherence to the law.

To serve as a warning, Claudio (alternately played by Kenn Cayunda and Brian Sy), a young nobleman, is arrested and sentenced to an immediate death for engaging in premarital sex with his fiancÃ©. Isabel (alternately played by Rizzy Alejandro and Reg de Vera), Claudioâ€™s sister and a virtuous nun, hesitantly pleads on her brotherâ€™s behalf, only to be given an immodest proposal by the supposedly virtuous Angelo: her brotherâ€™s life for her virginity.

Unknown to all, the Duke, disguised as a friar, has secretly been watching the events unfold. He conspires with Isabel and Mariana (alternately played by Nayie Caga-anan and Ysabel Yuzon), Angeloâ€™s long lost fiancÃ©.

They trick Angelo into sleeping with Mariana instead of Isabel, but Angelo still orders Claudio beheaded the next day. The Duke must find another way to save Claudioâ€™s life. He secretly weaves the final plot leading to a dramatic revelation scene. With the entire city as the audience, the Duke unmasks himself and decides on the cases of the convicted Claudio and the duplicitous Angelo. Do the Dukeâ€™s pronouncements make moral sense? Will the justice he bestows give everyone a happy ending?

Tanghalang Ateneo Premieres Glenn Mas' "The Death of Memory"

Tanghalang Ateneo goes contemporary Filipino in “The Death of Memory,” the second production of the company’s 29^th season. Written by Glenn Mas, “The Death of Memory” is a Palanca prize-winning play and an awarded thesis production at the Catholic University of America. Tanghalang Ateneo’s staging would be the play’s Philippine premiere production.

In the play, four people are trapped in a nowhere land where time has stopped, and with no memory of how they got there, and no ideas on how to get out. Each one carries a painful and violent memory -- sexual abuse, abandonment, murder -- that assaults them at unpredictable moments and ties them to this purgatorial prison.

A Keeper holds them in this limbo. At one point, the newly arrived man, Juan, incites his fellow prisoners to defy the Keeper and escape from memory. Will they be able to free themselves? How? This intense and imaginative play examines the strength of the human will to live and choose, to fight against paralyzing pasts, and to move on.

Ralph Quiblat and Brian Sy alternate as the newcomer, Juan, while Rachel Quong and Margarita Paje play the Keeper, the ethereal guardian of the nowhere land. The rest of the faculty cast are Randy Solis, Dianne Laserna, Miguel Lizada and Angela Serrano. In turn, the rest of the student cast is composed of BJ Crisostomo, Regina Francisco, Nicolo Magno and Gianna Villavicencio.

Director Ricardo Abad and Production Designer Salvador Bernal depart from their Asian motifs to create an abstract world that is replete with surreal and violent images. Joining them are choreographer Matthew Santamaria, lighting designer Jonjon Villareal, and Sounds and Graphic Designer Reamur David. Katski Flores, finalist in Cinemalaya 2007, incorporates film images of the character’s memories.

“The Death of Memory” runs from November 29 to December 1, 4-8, and 11-15 at 7pm, with additional 2pm shows on December 1, 8 and 15at the Rizal Mini-Theater of the Ateneo de Manila University.
